Women's Voices

Moderated by Sarah Scott, HBSc. and led by Mari Swingle, PhD, we will discuss past and ever-present challenges of being a woman in the sciences and healing.

This forum provides an open, informal and confidential dialogue, intended as support and community service, and will not be recorded.

The theme of July's discussion is, "Women's Voices." This session is open to women only.

AAPB created this workgroup to highlight incredible research contributions, clinical achievements, lift the voices of junior researchers, and address unique circumstances of women involved in the intervention of applied psychophysiology and biofeedback. We also seek to play a role in shifting the lens from illness to include wellness orientation in research of menarche, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause and broadening emergent interest in sex influence/differentiation in clinical and normative data bases. Additionally, we will brainstorm ways AAPB can provide meaningful connections and resources for ongoing support. Additionally, we will brainstorm ways AAPB can provide meaningful connections and resources for ongoing support.

Our stakeholders have requested ongoing engagement to allow a safe space for women to discuss the broad range of challenges they face in health sciences and healthcare delivery, including but not limited to:

  • Advocacy and Representation
  • Success Stories/Lessons Learned
  • Barriers to Professional Advancement
  • Family Life/Motherhood
  • Work-Life Balance
  • Pay Inequality
  • Limited Access to Networks
  • Gender Stereotypes/Perceptions of Competence
  • Harassment and Workplace Culture
  • Cultural Norms
  • Access to Funding and Resources
  • Recognition and Attribution
  • Health Disparities
  • Gender Bias and Discrimination

Women have been historically underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematic (STEM) fields. Be sure to visit the AAPB Human Library profiles, dedicated to our "barrier breakers."

Our intention is to celebrate and honor the empowering stories of those women who have paved the way for future generations. AAPB honors all women’s accomplishments in scientific progress, science leadership, science policy, science communication, and student mentorship.
